Microsoft’s Year

2007 will be the decisive year for Microsoft.

Over the last year Microsoft has been losing, failing to gain or losing momentum on several markets: search engines, web browsers and office suites. They’re also facing many threats, such as online tools that replace Microsoft Office applications and the growing trend of Linux for server operating systems.

To counter the mentioned threats and to regain it’s position, Microsoft has launched four strategic products: Windows Vista, Office 2007, Sharepoint 2007 (part of the Office Suite), Internet Explorer 7 and Live. These products try to act on three different, yet complementary, fronts:

  1. (Re)Create momentum, spread Microsoft on computers and prevent OS and Office Suite threats – with Windows Vista and Office 2007;
  2. Defend and improve browser share and regain internet notoriety – IE 7 and Live;
  3. Attack a new market – Sharepoint 2007.

I believe that in 2007 we will assist the complete success or failure of this measures. It will be a all or nothing year for Microsoft. They’re betting everything to regain their status – complementary software leader.

Will Vista succeed? I don’t think so. It brings no real, clear benefits, except for better looks. And on that field it doesn’t stand a chance against Mac OS X.

Will Office 2007 succeed? Yes and No. Not on his own (again, no new ground-breaking features. XML support is great, but that’s just for developers). But there’s a new powerful ally inside it – Sharepoint 2007. Sharepoint will really revolution information management at companies and they can be lead to deploy Office 2007 in order to have access to all the features.

IE 7 and Live? Not a chance. IE 7 will still rule for a while, due to the almost not-optional Windows Update, but they’ll keep losing ground to other browsers, mostly Firefox and Safari (you don’t really want me to explain you why, do you?). And Live… give me a break.

So, is it going to fail? Mostly, yes. How bad? We’ll see…

Microsoft, take care. That number one spot will shake quite a lot in 2007.
