Intellectual work has a great problem: you must be really focused and motivated in order to start producing anything good.
Everyday I face different challenges and that’s great, because it makes the work less boring and helps me grow as an individual – both professionally and personally. On the down side, most of the time I’m not as productive as I wanted to be.
First, I must motivate myself. Sometimes that’s hard, I tend to see the dark side of every task and my brain automatically rejects any new task – I must convince him.
Then I must focus. And boy, is that difficult. It’s kind of hard to turn off everything: browsing, seeing my email, chatting (IM, phone and live) and paying attention to other minor stuff. Time is also required – I believe that the shortest time frame I need to concentrate is 20 minutes. If I have to do something in under 20 minutes I’ll hardly start the task I should be doing.
On the other hand, when everything is set… miracles can happen 🙂
How about you?
